BMW's automatic engine start-stop function is designed to ensure the comfort and safety of the driver and passengers. The system intelligently decides whether to automatically shut off or restart the engine. The current BMW models are equipped with engine start-stop technology, which incorporates an enhanced motor with idle start-stop functionality into the traditional engine. This allows the engine to completely shut off when the vehicle meets the conditions for idle stop. When the vehicle needs to move forward again, the idle start-stop motor system quickly responds to the driver's start command, rapidly restarting the engine with seamless transition, significantly reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. During the stop phase, the use of in-car air conditioning, audio, and other equipment is not affected. When using this feature, simply press the brake pedal while driving; the engine will automatically shut off about two seconds after the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Keeping the brake pedal pressed will maintain the engine in the off state. Releasing the brake or turning the steering wheel will immediately restart the engine, allowing the driver to press the accelerator and start moving again—all while remaining in Drive (D) mode. To address the fatigue of continuously pressing the brake pedal, vehicles equipped with the Auto Hold system can activate the electronic parking brake (Auto Hold), in which case the engine will only start after lightly pressing the accelerator pedal, eliminating the need to keep the right foot on the brake.
