Should the Elantra use 5w30 or 5w40?

It is more appropriate to replace the engine oil according to the manufacturer's recommended 3w50 oil. Generally, the oil recommended by the manufacturer is more suitable. The difference between 5W30 and 5W40: Both 5W30 and 5W40 are all-season engine oils. 5W indicates that both oils have the same low-temperature starting performance, and the main difference between them lies in the numbers 30 and 40, which represent the oil's fluidity at 100 degrees Celsius. According to the rules for engine oil grading, the larger the number after W, the worse the fluidity at 100 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the high-temperature fluidity of 5W30 is better than that of 5W40. Engine oil for older cars: For older cars, the wear on components such as the valve train and crankshaft connecting rod mechanism is already quite severe, so it is advisable to choose a higher viscosity 5W40 oil.
I think for the Elantra, 5W30 is the most suitable choice for regular daily driving. When I was helping my friend maintain his Elantra, I referred to the owner's manual, which clearly states that 5W30 oil is recommended. This oil has moderate viscosity, starts quickly in winter, ensures smooth engine operation, and offers relatively lower fuel consumption. Hyundai engines are designed with precision, and using thicker 5W40 oil can increase resistance and affect performance. However, if your car has high mileage, say over 100,000 kilometers, or you live in a very hot southern area, 5W40 might be more durable. The key is to assess the actual situation—check the engine condition before changing the oil, and regular maintenance can extend the car's lifespan. Simply put, for normal driving, use 5W30—it's worry-free and economical. Don’t forget to change the oil every 5,000 kilometers or six months to keep the lubrication system healthy and prevent premature engine wear.
