Park in Neutral or First Gear?

When parking, you can choose either neutral or first gear. For short-term parking, neutral gear is suitable; for long-term parking, you must engage the P (Park) gear. Regardless of the gear selected, always remember to engage the handbrake. Additionally, parking in first gear is also an option. Using first gear won't harm the car and is suitable for specific scenarios. The following situations are appropriate for parking in first gear: 1. For older vehicles, the internal springs and cables of mechanical handbrakes may experience wear and fatigue, affecting braking performance or even causing failure. In such cases, using first gear along with the handbrake reduces the load on the handbrake, extending its lifespan. 2. When parking on an uphill slope, using first gear + handbrake can prevent the car from rolling backward.
