Original or Copy of Insurance Policy Required for Vehicle Inspection

During the annual inspection of a motor vehicle, the copy of the compulsory traffic insurance policy is required to be submitted. If the copy is lost, the original of the compulsory traffic insurance policy can also be submitted. According to Article 49 of the "Regulations on the Registration of Motor Vehicles," the owner of a motor vehicle may apply for an inspection compliance mark from the vehicle management office at the place of registration within three months before the expiration of the vehicle's inspection validity period. Before applying, the owner of the motor vehicle must resolve all road traffic safety violations and accidents related to the vehicle. When applying, the owner must fill out an application form and submit the vehicle's license, the compulsory traffic insurance certificate, the tax payment or tax exemption certificate for vehicle and vessel tax, and the motor vehicle safety technical inspection compliance certificate. The vehicle management office shall, within one day from the date of acceptance, confirm the motor vehicle, review the submitted certificates and documents, and issue the inspection compliance mark. Traffic management departments of public security organs and their traffic police officers shall, in accordance with the law, inspect the insurance mark of the compulsory traffic insurance when investigating and handling road traffic safety violations and road traffic accidents.
Last year when I went for my vehicle inspection, I brought both the original and duplicate copies of my insurance policy. The staff at the vehicle management office told me that the duplicate copy was actually sufficient. The line marked 'Compulsory Insurance Inspection Copy' on the duplicate is specifically designed for vehicle inspection purposes, while the original is better kept for claims. Nowadays, most regions have digitized the process, and policy information can be checked in the system, but it's still wise to have the duplicate copy just in case. Also, a reminder: the insurance coverage must be valid on the day of the inspection, so check your policy half a month in advance to ensure it hasn't expired. At our inspection station, they also require the vehicle registration certificate and the owner's ID card. It's most convenient to have all these documents organized in a folder.
