Methods for Troubleshooting Power Steering

There are 3 main methods for troubleshooting power steering: 1. Unilateral steering heaviness: In practice, there often occurs a malfunction where steering is light in one direction but heavy in the other. This is generally caused by leakage of the sealing components responsible for sealing the high-pressure chamber on one side, such as the steering screw seal ring or the oil passage seal ring on the piston circumference. 2. Heavy steering in both directions: It is necessary to investigate the mechanical aspects of the steering system and power assistance. The main mechanical cause of heavy steering lies in the steering knuckle. Long-term lack of maintenance, severe oil shortage, wear, or even burning of the steering column and bushings can all lead to heavy steering. 3. Heavy steering during rapid turning: If steering is slow, it remains light. However, during sharp turns when steering quickly, it immediately becomes heavy. This indicates that during rapid steering, the effective displacement of the power steering pump is insufficient. The replenishment of power steering fluid to the high-pressure chamber of the cylinder cannot keep up with the piston movement, preventing the establishment of power steering pressure, thus resulting in heavy steering.
