I've operated the Komatsu DX85-EX excavator for several years, and its transmission principle is actually quite interesting. Simply put, the high-speed rotation of the hydraulic motor is converted into low-speed, high-torque output through a gear set. Hydraulic oil drives the motor, which is connected to a three-stage reduction gear system, like a combination of planetary gears and parallel shaft gears. The motor spins fast but with little force, while the gear set works like a bicycle gear system, converting small rotations into high torque. During normal operation, it's best to start gently, as sudden stops or sharp turns can easily damage the transmission bearings. The gear oil needs to be changed every 500 hours, as dirty oil can wear out the gear teeth. Once I forgot to change the oil, and it started grinding loudly—repairing it was painfully expensive.
