Is Volkswagen FWD or RWD?

Among Volkswagen's current production models, there are only front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Advantages of FWD: Front-wheel drive vehicles can eliminate the need for a driveshaft, allowing the transmission, clutch, and main reducer of the drive axle to be integrated together, reducing the number of components in the drivetrain and saving space; front-wheel braking performance is improved; front-seat comfort is better than the rear seats; steering performance is enhanced; costs are reduced; and the interior space is more spacious. Disadvantages of FWD: Since major components such as the engine and drivetrain are concentrated in the front of the vehicle, the rear of the vehicle has less weight distribution, making the rear wheels prone to losing traction and resulting in poorer handling. Additionally, FWD vehicles inherently suffer from understeer issues. Moreover, the front axle serves as both the steering axle and the drive axle, leading to complex structure and manufacturing processes, higher production costs, and more difficult maintenance.
Many of my friends who drive Volkswagen vehicles have front-wheel-drive models, such as the common Golf and Polo. These cars are designed with a front-wheel-drive structure, which makes them fuel-efficient and stable for daily driving, with less tendency to skid when turning, making them particularly suitable for city traffic and rainy conditions. However, there are exceptions, like the high-performance GTI or SUVs such as the Touareg, which sometimes feature all-wheel-drive systems but are essentially based on front-wheel-drive platforms, making them more practical for daily commutes. If you're choosing a car, prioritizing a front-wheel-drive Volkswagen is economical and easier to maintain, avoiding the complexity of rear-wheel-drive transmission issues. Overall, looking at Volkswagen's lineup historically, the old Beetle was rear-wheel-drive, but now the mainstream models have shifted to front-wheel-drive to meet modern needs.
