Is Throttle Body Cleaning Necessary?

Throttle body cleaning is necessary. After prolonged use, carbon deposits will accumulate near the air flow valve plate of the throttle body. In severe cases, it can even clog the preset idle air intake opening. These issues can lead to sluggish throttle response, unstable idle speed, or even engine stalling. Therefore, the throttle body needs to be cleaned. Cleaning the throttle body every 20,000 to 40,000 kilometers is sufficient. If the driving conditions are harsh, the cleaning interval should be shortened. However, excessive cleaning can cause premature failure of the throttle body. Frequent cleaning gradually removes the special coating inside the throttle body chamber. Without this coating, the chamber becomes more prone to oil and grime buildup, creating a vicious cycle that ultimately leads to failure.
I think throttle cleaning is quite necessary, based on my driving experience. The throttle controls the engine's air intake, and over time, carbon deposits from gasoline combustion residues can accumulate, leading to unstable idling or even shaking, as well as higher fuel consumption. I remember my car frequently shaking in city traffic jams last year, but it became much smoother immediately after throttle cleaning. It's recommended to clean it every 20,000 kilometers or so, especially for those who often drive in congested areas, as carbon buildup is more common. If left uncleaned, it may eventually trigger the engine warning light or cause sluggish acceleration, resulting in higher repair costs. The cleaning process is inexpensive, costing only 50 to 100 yuan, so prevention is more cost-effective. Regular maintenance checks can ensure the car runs normally for worry-free travel and also improve driving comfort in small details.
