There is no fine for late renewal of a driver's license, but if you drive with an expired license, you will be treated as driving without a license and fined. If the driver's license has been expired for less than a year, it can be renewed normally; if it has been expired for more than one year but less than three years, the license will be revoked, but it can be renewed by passing the written test (Subject 1); if it has been expired for more than three years, the license will be invalid and cannot be renewed. Penalties for driving with an expired license: Driving a motor vehicle during the expiration period is prohibited and will be treated as driving without a license. If the driver's license has been expired for less than a year, the driver can renew it at any time, but driving during this period will result in a fine of 200 RMB. If the driver's license has been expired for more than one year without renewal, the traffic authorities will revoke it. If the expiration period is less than three years, the driver must retake and pass the written test (Subject 1) to restore their driving privileges. Driving during this period will result in a fine ranging from 200 RMB to 2,000 RMB. If the driver's license has been expired for more than three years, it will be permanently revoked. To drive again, the driver must retake the entire driver's license test. Otherwise, driving without a valid license will result in a fine of 2,000 RMB and up to 15 days of administrative detention.
