Is the BMW Engine Equipped with a Timing Belt or Chain?

BMW engines use timing chains. Timing Chain: The timing chain is an evolutionary product developed from the timing belt. Its primary function is to drive the engine's valve train, ensuring that the intake and exhaust valves open and close at the appropriate times to allow normal air intake and exhaust in the engine cylinders. Pros and Cons of Timing Chains: The advantage is their long lifespan, theoretically not requiring replacement. However, there are several drawbacks: higher operational resistance, increased noise, and noticeable noise from the chain slapping against the tensioner due to insufficient oil pressure in the tensioner during cold starts. In severe cases, this can lead to skipped teeth, causing timing errors. Reason for Not Using a Timing Belt: BMW engines operate at temperatures 15-35 degrees higher than standard engines. If a timing belt were used, its reliability would be even lower compared to standard engines, making it virtually certain that BMW does not use timing belts.
