Is On-Demand AWD Reliable?

On-demand AWD is reliable. The following are the advantages and disadvantages of on-demand AWD: Advantages of on-demand AWD: On-demand AWD can effectively reduce costs and also helps lower the overall vehicle weight. Due to its unique structure, it is more suitable for models with a front transverse engine and front-wheel-drive platform, enabling many SUVs or AWD sedans built on this platform to be equipped with an AWD system. Compared to rear-wheel-drive platforms, front-wheel-drive platforms are more conducive to expanding interior space, offer higher transmission efficiency, and produce less noise from the drivetrain. Disadvantages of on-demand AWD: Most on-demand AWD systems are limited by structural flaws when transferring power between the front and rear axles, preventing them from delivering more than 50% of the power to the rear axle. The active safety of on-demand AWD vehicles is not as high as that of full-time AWD vehicles. Additionally, on-demand AWD systems typically use open differentials on both the front and rear axles, which means they cannot escape if one side's two wheels lose traction in complex terrain. Therefore, this AWD system is not suitable for intense off-road conditions.
