Is it necessary to file for changing tire size?

Modifying the size of tires requires filing for record. Here are the precautions for modifying wheel rims: Size explanation: The modified wheel rims should not be excessively wide. The larger the rim, the thinner the tire must be to maintain the vehicle's aspect ratio, which makes the sensation of the ground more pronounced and significantly reduces passenger comfort when passing over uneven road sections. Only wheel rims of the same size can pass the annual inspection; if the rims are not of the same size, they will not pass the inspection. Registration is not required. The newly implemented "Motor Vehicle Inspection Work Regulations" classify rim modifications as legal modifications, which do not require registration. As long as the tire size remains unchanged, the vehicle can pass the annual inspection. Relevant regulations: Article 16, Item 1 of the "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" stipulates that no unit or individual may assemble a motor vehicle or alter the registered structure, construction, or characteristics of a motor vehicle without authorization. Without the permission of the public security traffic management department, modifying the chassis, engine, suspension, transmission system, steering system, tire rims, lights, body color painting, and external structure of a motor vehicle, or altering the relevant technical data of the motor vehicle to be inconsistent with the data announced by the State Council's motor vehicle product authority, constitutes modification.

I remember pondering this when I upgraded to larger alloy wheels last year. According to traffic regulations, any deviation from factory tire specifications – whether increasing diameter or reducing aspect ratio – requires registration at the vehicle management office. After my 4S店 modification increased tire diameter by 5%, I immediately took my ID card and vehicle license to update the registration photos. Skipping this invites multiple issues: annual inspections will definitely fail, traffic police may issue fines during roadside checks. Also ensure new tire width doesn't rub wheel arches and adjust tire pressure accordingly. Always verify parameters before changing wheels – never prioritize aesthetics over safety. When in doubt, consult experienced mechanics or check Article 16 of the 'Motor Vehicle Registration Regulations'.

Haha, my friends who are into car modifications must be concerned about this! When I modified my car, I did some research: changing the tire size (including rim size and tire width) basically requires filing with the authorities. If you don't file, your insurance might refuse to cover damages in case of an accident, and you'll need to find someone to handle the annual inspection for you, which is a hassle. Before I switched to low-profile tires last time, I first checked the tire parameter changes on the official website, then took the vehicle registration certificate to the DMV to file the changes. The process wasn't difficult, but I had to queue for two hours. However, be careful not to lower the tire load index, otherwise it's very dangerous on the highway. When changing tires, the tire pressure monitoring system also needs to be recalibrated. Don't just listen to the modification shop's hype; filing is the way to go for peace of mind.
