Is It Legal to Install a Roof Rack on a Car?

Installing a roof rack on a car requires applying for approval and modification procedures at the relevant vehicle management office within 10 days after the modification. Otherwise, it will be considered illegal modification. Below are the relevant regulations for modification: 1. Article 54 of the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" states that the load carried by a motor vehicle shall not exceed the approved load capacity specified in the vehicle's license, and the length and width of the load shall not exceed the dimensions of the vehicle body. 2. For heavy and medium-duty trucks and semi-trailers, the height of the load from the ground shall not exceed 4 meters, and for vehicles carrying containers, the height shall not exceed 4.2 meters. 3. For other motor vehicles carrying loads, the height from the ground shall not exceed 2.5 meters. 4. For motorcycles, the height of the load from the ground shall not exceed 1.5 meters, and the length shall not exceed the body by 0.2 meters. For two-wheeled motorcycles, the width of the load on each side shall not exceed the handlebars by 0.15 meters. 5. For three-wheeled motorcycles, the width of the load shall not exceed the body. Passenger cars are not allowed to carry goods except for the external roof rack and built-in luggage compartment. The height of the load on the roof rack of a passenger car shall not exceed 0.5 meters from the roof or 4 meters from the ground.
