Is it illegal to install a spoiler on a sedan?

Installing a spoiler on a sedan is considered illegal modification. According to Article 16, Item 1 of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, no unit or individual is allowed to assemble a motor vehicle or alter the registered structure, construction, or characteristics of a motor vehicle without authorization. Adding a small decorative-style spoiler does not count as illegal modification and will not be penalized. However, if a very exaggerated large spoiler is installed without filing with the vehicle management department, it may result in penalty points and fines if caught by traffic police. After the implementation of the new regulations, installing roof racks, modifying the front grille, changing the wheel rims, and adding side steps are all considered legal and do not require registration. However, it is important to note that these modifications must not alter the length and width of the vehicle, and the height of the roof rack must not exceed 300mm.
