Is It Dangerous to Have Only 6 Points Left on Your Driver's License?

Having only 6 points left on your driver's license is not dangerous. As long as you do not accumulate 12 penalty points within one cycle, there is no issue. According to Article 24 of the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China": If a motor vehicle driver's penalty points do not reach 12 within a scoring cycle and the imposed fines have been paid, the points will be cleared. If the penalty points do not reach 12 but there are unpaid fines, the points will carry over to the next scoring cycle. According to Article 26 of the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China": If a motor vehicle driver does not accumulate 12 penalty points in any scoring cycle during the 6-year validity period of the driver's license, the license will be renewed with a 10-year validity period. If the driver does not accumulate 12 penalty points in any scoring cycle during the 10-year validity period, the license will be renewed with a long-term validity.
To be honest, having driven for over 20 years, I did feel nervous when my driver's license was down to just 6 points. Think about it – the full score is 12, so having only half left means I've been a bit careless. One more violation, like speeding or not signaling, could wipe out the remaining points, and the consequences would be severe: license suspension plus mandatory classes or retests, which is a huge hassle. A friend of mine went through this two years ago – after losing all his points, he couldn’t drive for six months, relying solely on taxis for commuting, which was expensive and inconvenient. Now, I’m extra cautious: coming to a full stop at traffic lights, avoiding speeding on highways, and no phone distractions. Safe driving isn’t just about keeping points—it’s about protecting yourself and others. An accident causing injuries isn’t worth the risk. Having 6 points left is a wake-up call, forcing me to build better habits and follow the rules without cutting corners. In short, it’s a bit risky but fixable.
