Is DSG an Automatic Transmission?

DSG is an automatic transmission. DSG is Volkswagen's dual-clutch transmission. Unlike conventional semi-automatic transmission systems, DSG is based on a manual transmission rather than an automatic transmission. It has the external appearance of an automatic transmission with the same gear settings as an automatic, but its internal structure consists of the gear mechanism of a manual transmission. DSG uses the traditional P, R, N, D, and S gear settings, allowing automatic shifting into D (Drive) mode or S (Sport) mode. In normal mode, DSG upshifts early to reduce engine noise and improve fuel economy, while in sport mode, the transmission stays in lower gears longer to ensure sufficient power.
DSG is the dual-clutch transmission developed by the Volkswagen Group, essentially a type of automatic transmission. This transmission is particularly smart, equipped with two sets of clutch systems. When you're driving, one set manages the odd-numbered gears, while the other keeps an eye on the even-numbered gears, pre-engaging the next gear before you even shift. I've driven a Golf with DSG, and the power delivery during acceleration is incredibly smooth, making it feel different from a traditional automatic transmission with hardly any jerking. However, this type of transmission is a bit delicate and requires regular transmission fluid changes, so maintenance costs can be higher. Many German car brands like Volkswagen and Audi use this technology in their models.
