Is Dry or Wet Application Better for Roof Film?

Both dry and wet application methods are acceptable for roof film installation, as long as you visit a professional shop and use quality products. Here are the detailed steps for film application: 1. Clean the surface thoroughly before application, preferably using a non-greasy cleaner or 75% alcohol, then rinse and let it dry. 2. Remove the backing paper of the product, and use a spray bottle filled with white liquor or alcohol diluted with water to evenly mist a small amount onto the adhesive side and the application area. 3. Align the vinyl film adhesive side to the concave surface, then adjust and position it correctly by moving it up, down, left, and right. 4. Press the vinyl film surface firmly with both thumbs in a straight line, slowly pushing outward to both sides to squeeze out the water. 5. Press the middle of the vinyl film surface firmly and push upward to flatten it, squeezing out water. If there are any lifted edges or wrinkles, use a heat gun to warm it slightly while smoothing it out. Repeat the same process downward. 6. Avoid washing the vehicle within 24 hours after application.
As an enthusiast who enjoys hands-on car modifications, I find the wet method more suitable. The roof has a large surface area and may not be perfectly flat. Spraying a soapy water solution during the wet application allows you to easily slide the film into position and adjust the angle to avoid bubbles. Although the dry method is faster, once the film sticks, it's difficult to reposition, often leading to wrinkles or small air bubbles that are troublesome to clean up later. Practical experience tells me that the wet method works best on a cool, overcast day with just a spray bottle, squeegee, and cleaner. In the long run, the wet method provides a stronger and more durable bond, reducing the risk of edges lifting. After each application, it's essential to check the seal to ensure no dust has compromised the appearance. In short, when applying film to a car roof, taking the time to use the wet method is definitely worth it.
