Is an SUV an Off-Road Vehicle?

An SUV is not an off-road vehicle; it is a comprehensive automobile that combines the performance of both off-road vehicles and sedans. Representative SUV models include: Nissan Juke, Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG, InternoDi Artemis, Bentley Bentayga, etc. An SUV is an upgraded version of a sedan with more space and higher ground clearance, designed and manufactured to meet the driving and riding needs in urban and highway environments. SUVs use the same unibody structure and MacPherson suspension system as sedans, and come in both four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive configurations, offering the comfort and spaciousness required for urban commuting and family use.
As a frequent SUV driver, I think many people misunderstand that SUVs are off-road vehicles. In fact, SUVs are divided into several types: urban SUVs and off-road SUVs. I've driven a CR-V for five years, which is a typical urban SUV—high ground clearance, spacious, suitable for daily commuting and light muddy roads, but not really capable of serious mountain climbing or water fording. True off-road vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler or Toyota Land Cruiser come with low-range four-wheel drive, differential locks, and superior off-road capability to handle tough terrains. SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, meaning a multi-purpose vehicle, not all of which are designed for off-roading. When buying a car, consider your needs: if you mainly drive in the city, there's no need to spend big on an off-road model. Also, pay attention to tire wear during regular maintenance to ensure safety first, because mistaking an urban SUV for an off-road vehicle can lead to accidents or even rollovers.
