Is an ID card required for the written driving test (Subject 1)?

You only need to bring your ID card for the exam. The admission ticket and other documents are handled by the driving school, which will distribute them during the test. Electronic IDs cannot be used for the exam. If you don't have an ID card, you can apply for a temporary one, which holds the same validity as a regular ID card. The "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver's Licenses" clearly states that the Subject 1 exam can be taken twice on the same day. If you fail the first attempt, you can retake it for free. If you fail the second attempt, the Subject 1 exam will be terminated, and you can only reschedule after ten days. The Subject 1 test consists of 100 questions, including single-choice and true/false questions, each worth 1 point, totaling 100 points. If you answer 11 questions incorrectly during the exam, the system will automatically submit the test and end the session. The Subject 1 exam is computer-based and lasts 45 minutes. Subject 1 test content includes: regulations on driver's licenses and motor vehicle management; road traffic conditions and rules; traffic safety violations and penalties; regulations on traffic accident handling; basic knowledge of motor vehicles; local regulations; knowledge of braking systems and safety devices for large and medium-sized passenger and freight vehicles; specialized knowledge for wheeled self-propelled machinery, trams, and trolleybuses. Subject 1 exam precautions: Candidates should dress appropriately (no slippers), and electronic devices and bags are not allowed in the exam room. Bring your ID card and queue to enter the waiting hall. Observe the instructions and procedures on the large screen, and store personal belongings in lockers before entering the exam room. At the identity verification station, you'll be assigned a seat. Once seated, begin the exam, ensuring the camera is properly aligned and following exam discipline. If you fail the first attempt, you can retake it the same day. If you fail again, you'll need to pay to reschedule. After the exam, queue to collect your score report and sign it; unsigned reports are invalid. There is no limit to the number of times you can schedule the Subject 1 exam. Each subject can be taken once, with one free retake if you fail. If you don't take the retake or fail it, the exam ends, and you must reschedule. For Subject 2 and Subject 3, there are only five attempts. These can be rescheduled ten days after a failed attempt. If you fail the Subject 3 safety and civilized driving knowledge test, your previously passed road driving skills test results remain valid. The driving test consists of three subjects: Subject 1, Subject 2, and Subject 3. Subject 1 covers traffic safety laws, regulations, and related knowledge. Subject 2 tests field driving skills. Subject 3 includes two parts: road driving skills and safety and civilized driving knowledge. The safety and civilized driving knowledge test is conducted after Subject 3, so it's commonly referred to as Subject 4, though this term isn't officially recognized (e.g., in the Ministry of Public Security's Order No. 123). The exam duration is 45 minutes.
Back when we were taking the driver's license test, the ID card was absolutely essential. Before every exam, the instructor would repeatedly remind us: without the ID card, you couldn't even get through the main gate. The system required scanning the ID card to verify identity and prevent impersonation. If you temporarily couldn't find your ID card, don't panic—rush to the local police station to apply for a temporary ID, which could usually be obtained the same day. However, it's best to check your documents a week in advance to avoid delaying the exam. I remember one time a student forgot their ID card and was sweating profusely in panic, ultimately having to reschedule for a retest, wasting two months of practice time for nothing. Nowadays, the test centers have strict management—besides the ID card, some places also require facial recognition plus fingerprint verification.
