If you are from another city within the same province, a residence permit is not required. However, if you are from another province, you will need to provide a residence permit. The examination consists of the following four parts: 1. Subject 1: Road traffic rules, traffic signals, handling of traffic safety violations and accidents, regulations on the application and use of motor vehicle driver's licenses, motor vehicle registration, and other road traffic safety laws, regulations, and rules; 2. Subject 2: Testing the ability to reverse into a parking space, mastery of motor vehicle driving skills, and the ability to judge the spatial position of a motor vehicle; 3. Subject 3: The performance of driving a motor vehicle on the road to complete test items, compliance with traffic laws and regulations, and the comprehensive control of the motor vehicle; proper use of lights, horns, seat belts, and other devices; the ability to correctly observe and judge road traffic conditions; 4. Subject 4: Extracting knowledge related to safe and civilized driving from Subject 1, as well as safe driving skills under complex conditions and emergency handling in critical situations, which is conducted after the actual road driving test of "Subject 3" to further assess the candidate's level of traffic awareness.
Last year, I got my driver's license in Dingxi, and the whole process went quite smoothly. However, for friends whose household registration is not in Dingxi, it's necessary to prepare a residence permit or temporary residence certificate. Since I'm a local, I only needed to bring my ID card and household registration booklet when registering, with no additional requirements. But I helped an out-of-town colleague with this—his household registration was in another city in Gansu—and the driving school said he must first go to the local police station to apply for a residence permit or temporary residence registration certificate. Generally, this registration needs to be completed before applying for the driver's license. I recommend checking with the neighborhood or community service center before enrolling in a driving school, as they can quickly handle this. Getting a driver's license isn’t just about documents; you also need to pass a medical exam and a theory test. Safety comes first when driving on the road, so don’t skip these steps to save trouble. When driving regularly, checking your vehicle’s lights and brake system periodically can reduce risks, and developing safe driving habits is crucial.
