Is 120 Degrees Celsius Normal for BMW Engine Oil Temperature?
1 Answers
An oil temperature of 120 degrees Celsius is normal for BMW vehicles, as BMW engines inherently operate at higher temperatures, with normal oil temperatures typically exceeding coolant temperatures. However, excessively high oil temperatures can cause certain hazards. Excessive oil temperature poses significant risks to the engine: It leads to reduced oil viscosity, oil burning, destruction of lubrication film in engine components, accelerated wear of parts, and in severe cases, may cause bearing seizure or cylinder scoring. Overheated engines also cause premature combustion of fuel in cylinders, resulting in insufficient compression and reduced power output. Lowering oil temperature can slow down coolant temperature rise: Reducing oil temperature not only decreases heat generation in the engine but also indirectly reduces the heat absorbed by the coolant, thereby slowing the rate of coolant temperature increase.
