Is 120°C Oil Temperature Normal for a BMW 5 Series?

For a BMW 5 Series, an oil temperature within 120°C is considered appropriate, while temperatures above 120°C are abnormal. Under normal circumstances, the operating temperature of the engine oil in a BMW 5 Series typically ranges between 70°C and 90°C. However, during aggressive driving, the engine operates under high load, causing the temperature to rise slightly, reaching around 100°C to 110°C. Therefore, an oil temperature of 100°C is quite normal. Below is an introduction to the oil temperature in the BMW 5 Series: 1. High Coolant Temperature: This is a fault phenomenon caused by increased internal pressure in the coolant pipes due to high engine coolant temperature. Apart from high coolant temperature, the engine oil can also experience high temperature issues. This is closely related to the antifreeze. 2. High Antifreeze Temperature: Excessive antifreeze temperature can also elevate the oil temperature (oil temperature being higher than coolant temperature). When the oil temperature is too high (coolant temperature also rises, reducing heat dissipation), the thermal stability of the oil under high-temperature conditions is severely tested. This is why some oils become thinner at high temperatures, leading to oil burning phenomena.
