Cadillac's current ATS model will be gradually discontinued, to be replaced by the CT5 and CT4, both of which will continue to be built using the rear-wheel-drive platform. With the discontinuation of the ATS, the domestically produced ATS-L model will also undergo a model change in 2021. Below is an introduction to the Cadillac ATS-L: The ATS-L's configuration is decent, with standard features including knee airbags, BOSE audio system, one-button start, keyless entry, and engine start-stop technology. The ATS-L is equipped with a 2.0T high-performance inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which has been awarded as one of the 'Top Ten Engines.' It delivers a maximum horsepower of 279 hp, a maximum power of 205 kW, and a maximum torque of 400 Nm, paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

When I researched used cars last year, I paid special attention to the ATS-L. Its generational update was actually quite clear. It was launched in China in 2014, but the true generational change came with the major facelift in 2017. The grille was updated to Cadillac's new signature star-burst design, and the taillights were changed to sharper wing-shaped units. The powertrain remained largely unchanged, but the upgraded CUE multimedia system became much smoother, and features like an electronic parking brake were added. To specify the timing, the 2017 model released at the end of 2016 marked the generational shift. On the road, versions with the dense chrome dot-matrix front grille are mostly the post-facelift models.

As an enthusiast of American cars, I've gone through Cadillac's official archives. The ATS-L underwent a core generation change in 2017, with sharper body lines, especially the sportier rear bumper design. The transmission programming was also recalibrated, with many existing owners reporting reduced gear shift jerks. Most importantly, that year's new chassis incorporated more aluminum alloy materials. The manufacturer claimed a weight reduction of 50kg, though the difference wasn't very noticeable during actual driving. However, there was indeed some improvement in fuel consumption.

My friend just bought a used ATS-L, and I helped him check the vehicle records during inspection. The model change occurred with the 2017 version, with the 10th digit of the VIN changing from G to H being a clear indicator. This generation upgraded to headlight clusters, with the turn signals becoming sequential. Many people easily confuse the minor facelift of the 2015 model with the major redesign in 2017, but the wheels are the most straightforward way to tell: post-redesign, the high-end models feature 18-inch five-petal spoke wheels, while the older models all had 17-inch ones.

This model is commonly seen in repair shops, and I have experience distinguishing between generations. All ATS-L models produced after July 2017 are the facelifted versions, with completely different engine bay wiring. The issue of refrigerant leakage from AC pipes in older models was improved in the facelift, and the compressor mounting bracket was also reinforced. To identify them, the facelifted version has an OnStar button on the rearview mirror base, while the older version has a plain plastic housing. When customers ask which generation I recommend, I usually say the facelifted version has 30% fewer faults.

Frequent visitors to 4S stores know that the 2017 ATS-L generation change made quite a splash. The sales team at the time heavily promoted new technologies, such as the Bose ANC active noise cancellation system in the new generation, while the older models only had standard audio. The chassis bushings were upgraded from rubber to hydraulic, making the sound over speed bumps much more solid. The most practical improvement was the standard inclusion of a tire pressure monitoring display across all models after the generation change, unlike the older models which only had an alarm without showing specific values. In the current used car market, the 2017 models are generally priced over 10,000 yuan higher than the older models, and for good reason.
