How to Use the S Gear?
2 Answers
S gear is the sport mode of a car. In S gear sport mode, the transmission can shift freely, and the shifting timing is delayed, allowing the engine to maintain high RPM for a longer time. The car will run at a lower gear with higher RPM for an extended period, thereby achieving greater torque output and acceleration. The method for using the S gear in an automatic transmission car is as follows: 1. Enter Sport Mode: Shift the gear to D, then push the gear lever to the right, and the transmission will enter sport mode. 2. Shifting Method: Use forward and backward pushes of the gear lever to shift gears. Pushing forward shifts up, while pushing backward shifts down. 3. Switching Gears: Push the lever to the left to the D position to complete the switch between S and D gears.
When I first learned to drive, I was also curious about the S mode. Actually, S stands for Sport mode. On most cars, you can simply shift the gear lever from D to S, or press a dedicated button to switch. I often use it for accelerating and overtaking on highways because it automatically keeps the engine at higher RPMs, delays gear shifts, and makes the car more responsive and powerful. However, remember not to use it frequently in city traffic—it’s fuel-inefficient and noisy. It’s also helpful on mountain roads or sharp turns, improving traction. When trying it for the first time, it’s best to practice in an open area to feel the power difference, and avoid stomping on the gas pedal suddenly. If the engine overheats or the tires slip, switch back to D mode and let it rest. In short, S mode is a fun tool, but using it wisely ensures both safety and efficiency.
