How to Use the Pajero 4WD System?

To engage the Pajero's 4WD system, shift the small gear lever into 4WD mode. Below is an introduction to the 4WD system: 1. 4WD Lever Introduction: The modes are H2H, H4H, H4L, and L4L. Modes with the number "4" indicate 4WD modes, and you can choose different modes according to different situations. 2. 4WD Lever Location: Located next to the gear shift lever, the smaller control lever is the 4WD lever. 3. Mode Introduction: (1) H2 mode: Rear-wheel drive mode, suitable for well-paved roads, mainly for fuel efficiency. (2) H4 mode: Full-time 4WD, designed for slippery or snowy paved roads to enhance traction. (3) H4L mode: Provides low-torque 4WD effect for long-distance, less steep muddy, bumpy, or loose gravel roads. (4) L4L: Used when climbing steep slopes that require additional torque, providing high-torque 4WD effect, commonly used for uphill driving.
I've been driving for over 20 years and the Pajero is my favorite off-road vehicle. Its four-wheel drive system is simple yet practical. For daily city driving, I usually choose 2H mode (rear-wheel drive only), which is fuel-efficient and quiet. But when it rains or on muddy roads, I immediately switch to 4H (four-wheel drive) for better traction and stability. When going to the mountains and encountering steep slopes or deep snow, I stop, shift to neutral, and engage 4HLc to lock the center differential - this prevents wheel slip and works exceptionally well. For extreme conditions like rocky terrain, I use 4LLc (low-range gear) for increased torque to crawl slowly. I mostly use 2H for fuel economy, remembering to keep speed below 30 km/h when switching modes to avoid component wear. The system is durable, but it's crucial not to keep locked modes engaged too long on paved roads to prevent drivetrain damage. Overall it provides a great, safe and reliable driving experience.
