How to Use the Paddle Shifters on the Corolla Hybrid?
2 Answers
The paddle shifters on the Corolla Hybrid are located behind the steering wheel. To operate them, simply shift the gear into D, S, or manual mode. Pulling the paddles toward the driver with your index and middle fingers upshifts the gear, while pressing them toward the steering wheel with your thumb downshifts. This operation is particularly useful when you need to accelerate quickly for overtaking. The Toyota Corolla is a compact car with body dimensions of 4635mm in length, 1780mm in width, and 1455mm in height. The Corolla is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, which is more than sufficient for daily commuting.
I've been driving the Corolla Hybrid for quite a while now, and the paddle shifters are quite handy to use. There's a paddle on each side of the steering wheel—the left one with a minus sign and the right one with a plus sign. You can activate the manual shifting function by switching to S mode or B mode while driving. For example, when going down a long slope, I press the left paddle to downshift, and the engine immediately helps with braking, making the car much more stable without wearing out the brake pads. When climbing a hill or overtaking, I upshift with the right paddle, and the extra power makes acceleration effortless. New drivers shouldn't worry—just tap the paddles briefly (no need to hold them down), as the system also has automatic protection to prevent engine damage from shifting too low. I've tried manually controlling speed at highway exits, and the car feels more responsive. For daily commuting, it's easier to stick with automatic mode, but playing with manual mode adds some fun to driving—it's really flexible either way.
