Press the ON/OFF button to activate the cruise control system, at which point the cruise control indicator light on the dashboard will illuminate; Accelerate to the desired speed (above 40km/h), then press the SET button. At this point, you can release the accelerator pedal, and the speed will be set at the current speed; Press "RES+" to increase the speed from the current setting, or press "SET-" to decrease the speed from the current setting; Cruise control can be deactivated by pressing the brake pedal, pressing the CANCEL button, or pressing the ON/OFF button.

The cruise control on the 2017 Passat is quite straightforward to use. Once the car reaches the desired speed, simply press the SET button on the left side of the steering wheel, and the dashboard will display the cruise control indicator. To accelerate, nudge the RES button upward; to decelerate, press the SET button downward—each adjustment changes the speed by approximately 2 km/h. If the car ahead gets too close or you need to slow down, stepping on the brake will automatically pause the cruise control. Pressing RES again will resume the previously set speed. This feature is especially useful on highways, as it relieves the right foot from constantly pressing the accelerator, making long drives much more comfortable. There’s also a button on the lower right side of the steering wheel to adjust the following distance, with three settings available to suit different road conditions for optimal safety.

The operation logic of the cruise control is very user-friendly. You can only activate it after starting the car and driving above 40 km/h. Flipping the switch on the left-hand lever towards yourself puts it into standby mode. Once you reach the desired speed, press SET to confirm, and a green indicator light will illuminate on the dashboard. Both acceleration and deceleration are controlled by the same knob—turning it clockwise increases speed, while turning it counterclockwise decreases speed, with very natural feedback. For temporary overtaking, simply press the accelerator deeply without interrupting the set speed. I particularly love using this feature to maintain stable fuel consumption on highways. Remember to turn off the system before exiting the highway—there's an OFF button located below the left side of the steering wheel.

As a female car owner, I find this feature of the Passat extremely user-friendly. While driving, simply locate the cruise control area on the left side of the steering wheel, set the desired speed, and the system takes over the throttle. In traffic jams, stepping on the brake automatically pauses the system, and pressing the RES button resumes the set speed when the car ahead moves away, eliminating the need for reconfiguration. Remember to turn off cruise control during rainy or foggy conditions, as manual control is safer on slippery roads. I always use this feature on highways and haven't encountered any issues in three years of use. The vehicle manual states that the cruise control operates within a speed range of 30-200 km/h.

Veteran drivers emphasize several key precautions: Always check if the brake lights are functioning properly before starting, as this is the safety foundation of the cruise system. When activating it, the right foot must hover over the brake pedal as a backup, and the following distance is recommended to be set to the farthest level. Manual takeover is advised when entering or exiting tunnels or sharp curves, and braking should be decisive in emergencies. For prolonged use, switch to manual driving every 2 hours to stretch your legs. The 2017 model's system is quite mature, but avoid using it on icy roads or in complex road conditions.
