How to Use BMW's Auto-Dipping Mirror Feature When Reversing?

BMW's auto-dipping mirror feature activates automatically when reversing. The setup method is as follows: 1. Start the engine, ensure the mirror adjustment switch is on the left side, adjust the seat memory, and reset the right mirror to its memory position; 2. Move the mirror adjustment switch to the right, shift to R gear, manually adjust the right mirror to the desired dipping position, shift back to N gear, and return the mirror adjustment switch to the left; 3. Shift into R gear again to test, and the right mirror should dip to the previously adjusted position, completing the setup. BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) is a German luxury car brand, with model series including i, X, Z, and pure numeric models 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, as well as the M series, which is an enhanced version based on these models.
As a BMW owner, I find the auto-dipping side mirror feature incredibly convenient. When shifting into reverse (R), it automatically angles the right side mirror downward, giving me a clear view of curbs and parking lines to avoid scraping. Setting it up is simple: first, park and shift to reverse (no need to start the engine), then manually adjust the mirror to your preferred low position—usually slightly downward to focus on the ground. Save this position using the memory seat button (I use the steering wheel settings). From then on, it automatically adjusts when reversing and resets when driving forward or shifting to park (P). This feature is especially handy in crowded parking lots, eliminating neck strain and reducing blind-spot risks. Ensure your BMW system saves the correct position—preferably on level ground. If it malfunctions, check the battery or visit a dealership for recalibration; it’s rarely a serious issue.
