As a frequent BMW driver, I'm very familiar with the remote start function using the key. Here's how it works: First, make sure the car is completely locked, all doors are securely closed, and windows are rolled up. Then take out your car key - see that button with the engine icon? Press and hold it for about 3 to 5 seconds until you hear the engine start, then release. The advantage is you can warm up the car in advance; in winter the interior will already be cozy when you enter, and in summer you can turn on the AC for cooling. Note that after starting, the engine will automatically shut off after about 10 minutes maximum as an anti-theft measure. Also, keep the key within 30 meters of the car for best results - the function may fail with poor signal. Remember to start the car again with the key when you get in before driving, as this is a safety feature. Personally I find this little trick extremely practical, significantly improving daily convenience, especially during busy commutes when it saves time.
