How to Use Air Conditioning While Parked?

First, lower the car windows slightly to leave a gap, ensuring air exchange between the inside and outside. Turn off the air recirculation button and switch the air conditioning to fresh air mode. Adjust the air vents so they are not directly facing your face.
When I want to turn on the AC while parked, my approach is to first start the car engine and let it idle because the compressor needs the engine to operate for cooling. Then, I press the AC button—most cars have an AUTO button that automatically adjusts temperature and fan speed, saving manual effort. If the car is too hot, I usually roll down the windows for two or three minutes to let the heat escape before closing them and turning on the AC, which cools the interior faster. However, it’s important to note that running the AC while parked increases fuel consumption—about 1 liter per hour, which isn’t negligible. Most crucially, never run the AC in an enclosed space like an underground parking lot to avoid exhaust fumes causing oxygen deprivation or poisoning—safety first. Additionally, prolonged idling with the AC on can lead to carbon buildup in the engine, affecting performance. It’s best to limit this practice to short periods.
