Here is how to turn on the fog lights of the Cavalier: 1. The front fog light switch is in the ON mode. When the low beam is on, rotate the fog light switch knob to the front fog light position to turn on the front fog lights. 2. The rear fog light switch is in the ON mode. When the low beam is on, rotate the fog light switch knob to the rear fog light position to turn on the rear fog lights. The knob will automatically return to its original position after being released. 3. The ignition switch is in the ON mode. When the front fog lights are on, rotate the fog light switch knob to the front and rear fog light positions to turn on both the front and rear fog lights. The knob will automatically return to the front fog light position after being released. Here is additional information on how to replace the fog lights of the Cavalier: 1. Turn the wheels to the right to expose the working area and remove the screws on the cover plate. 2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the two plastic fasteners under the front bumper. Pry open a gap in the cover plate behind the tire, and you will find the power connector under the fog light. 3. Pry open the clip next to the connector, remove the power connector, rotate the fog light counterclockwise to remove it, and then install the new fog light.
When I first drove the Cavalier, it took me a while to figure out the fog light switch too. From the driver's seat, look down at the left rear side of the steering wheel—there's a rotary knob on the light control stalk. First turn on the low beams (twist to the second position), then don't release immediately—grip the outermost ring of the stalk and twist it forward one notch. A yellow warning light with a wavy line on the left will appear on the dashboard, indicating the front fog lights are on. Twist one more notch and a red wavy light symbol will appear for the rear fog lights. Remember to turn them off when the fog clears—these lights are blindingly bright on the road. Last time I forgot to turn them off, an oncoming car flashed their high beams at me as a reminder.
