How to troubleshoot the flashing 4LO indicator on a Land Cruiser?

Press the brake pedal and shift into N gear, then flip up the first of the four levers in front of the center console from left to right (the one marked with P). Remove the transfer case adjustment motor and clean the contacts. If the transfer case adjustment motor is damaged, it needs to be replaced with a new one directly.
My Land Cruiser also had the 4LO light flashing issue last year. After a lot of troubleshooting, I finally found out it was a problem with the transfer case actuator motor. I recommend trying the transfer case initialization first: park the vehicle, shift to N, turn on the ignition without starting the engine, then repeatedly switch between high and low range five times, ending in 4H. You should hear the motor clicking during the process. If the light still flashes, you'll need to check the wiring, especially to see if the gear position sensor has mud or water ingress causing oxidation. Once after playing in the desert, my sensor connector was full of sand - cleaning it fixed the problem. Worn motor gears can also cause displacement inaccuracy, in which case you'll need to disassemble the motor and replace the gear set. Those with good DIY skills can do it themselves but will need specialized puller tools.
