How to Start the Engine in Subject 2?

Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait for 5-8 seconds before turning the key to the start position to start the engine. The purpose is to allow the fuel pump to engage before starting. Once the engine starts smoothly, immediately release the ignition key to let it automatically return to the ON position. If the engine fails to start smoothly, avoid continuously cranking the starter for more than 5 seconds. Additionally, wait at least 15 seconds before attempting to start again to protect the battery and starter. If the engine fails to start after three consecutive attempts, there may be an issue with the engine, and further attempts will likely be ineffective.
When I first started learning to drive and taking the Subject 2 test, I was most afraid of making mistakes during the ignition process. After getting in the car, the instructor always emphasized adjusting the seat and mirrors first, then pressing the brake pedal and confirming the gear is in neutral or P. The next step is to insert the key and gently turn it clockwise to the start position, releasing it once the engine sound changes. The key is not to panic—many beginners get flustered, either forgetting to press the brake or turning the key too quickly, causing the engine to stall. During hill-start practice, the timing of ignition is even more critical: wait until the car is completely stationary, engage the handbrake, and then proceed to avoid rolling. Safety is the top priority—always scan the surroundings for people or obstacles before ignition. I believe practicing a few more times will make it second nature, but the key is to memorize the steps and not rely on habit. Now that I’ve passed the test, looking back, this fundamental skill has really helped me avoid mistakes in everyday driving.
