How to Solve the Problem of a Too Dark Rearview Mirror in a Dash Cam?

If you don't want the rearview mirror to be too dark, you can choose the camera-style dash cam, which is usually installed on the windshield in front of the rearview mirror and won't block it. 1. Reason: The rearview mirror of the dash cam appears too dark because rearview mirror dash cams are anti-glare type. To prevent the light from vehicles behind from reflecting into the driver's eyes through the rearview mirror, an anti-glare coating is used, which makes it look darker. 2. Advantage: The strong light from vehicles behind can reflect into the eyes of the driver in front through the rearview mirror, and that sudden intense glare can easily cause traffic accidents. Rearview mirror dash cams usually come with an anti-glare function that can refract strong light.
The most practical approach is to first check the dash cam lens and the car's rear windshield. Clean the lens with a microfiber cloth and some alcohol to remove any fingerprints or water stains. If the window has dark tint, the dash cam won't capture anything at night due to lack of light. Either cut out a small section of the tint at the lens position or switch to a lighter tint. Also, try adjusting the dash cam's night mode—some models with infrared illumination require manual activation. If the lens angle is adjustable, tilting it slightly downward may reduce glare from the glass. Finally, ensure the lens resolution is sufficient—older 480P models are practically useless at night, while upgrading to 1080P or higher makes a noticeable difference. This is based on years of hands-on experience with dash cams.
