Setting the ignition timing on a car is a precise task that involves aligning the engine's crankshaft position with the firing of the spark plugs for optimal combustion. For most classic cars with a distributor, you'll need a timing light and a basic set of hand tools. The core steps are: locating the timing marks, connecting the light, loosening the distributor, and adjusting it while the engine is running until the marks align with the specified degree Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). This specification is critical and varies by engine; it's not a one-size-fits-all setting.

Before you begin, ensure you have your vehicle's specific timing specification, which is typically found on an under-hood emissions label or in the service manual. You'll also need to disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose if your distributor has one to get an accurate base timing reading. Safety is paramount—work in a well-ventilated area, keep loose clothing and tools clear of moving engine components, and use eye protection.

The following table lists common timing specifications for illustrative purposes. Always prioritize your vehicle's official factory specification.

Vehicle Model (Example)Engine SizeTiming Specification (BTDC)Notes
Ford Mustang (1995)5.0L V810°With SPOUT connector disconnected
Chevrolet Small Block (350ci)5.7L V8Typical base setting for many models
Jeep 4.0L I64.0L12°Common for 1990s models
Honda Civic (D16 Engine)1.6L16° ± 2°Check specific year/model

Modern cars with distributorless ignition systems (DIS) or direct ignition systems are controlled entirely by the engine control unit (ECU). You cannot mechanically adjust the timing on these vehicles; any timing-related issues require a professional diagnostic scan tool to read trouble codes and assess sensor data.

Grab a timing light, find the speckled marks on your crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. Hook the light up to the battery and number one spark plug wire. Start the engine, let it get to operating temp, then point the light at the marks. You'll see a mark on the pulley look like it's standing still. Loosen the distributor just enough to turn it. Twist it slowly until that moving mark lines up with the correct number on the cover. Tighten everything back up. That's the gist of it. Make sure you know the right number for your car first.
