How to Set the Sunroof on a 2012 Passat?

First, manually force the sunroof to close. Remove the overhead light cover panel (the panel with the sunroof switch), disconnect the motor wiring harness plug or disconnect the negative battery cable, wait for 10 seconds, and then reconnect the wiring harness or power. Rotate the switch from the closed position to the open position by about 15 degrees, then quickly rotate it back to the closed position. After turning off the ignition switch for 5-7 seconds, the sunroof setting memory is completed.
When I first drove my 2012 Passat, I also encountered the sunroof setting issue and eventually figured out a reliable method. Start by turning on the ignition to power up the car, then locate the small control panel for the sunroof switch. Press and hold the button that tilts the sunroof upward without releasing it for about 15 seconds. You'll notice the sunroof move on its own: first, it will fully close, then tilt open a small gap, and finally close automatically again. Once this sequence is complete, you can release the button. Remember not to touch any other buttons during the process. After setting, test the switch to ensure smooth operation. If the battery is frequently disconnected or replaced, you'll need to repeat this setting process, otherwise the sunroof won't remember its open/close positions. Also, don’t forget to regularly clean the sunroof tracks on older cars, as debris can cause the setting to malfunction.
I just reset the sunroof on my 2012 Passat by following the official manual a few days ago. First, start the engine to power up the vehicle. Here's the key step: Press and hold the control button in the forward direction (the closing direction) with your fingertip for at least 25 seconds without releasing. Watch the sunroof movement carefully: it will automatically fully close, then slightly lift up and settle back down—don't interfere during the process. After completion, I tested the anti-pinch function and it worked normally. Actually, many German cars require this reset procedure after power loss—my friend's Magotan uses the same method. One more tip: if the reset fails, check the fuse, specifically the F28 in the dedicated sunroof fuse box.
