Thoroughly clean and dry the area where the soundproof seal strip needs to be installed and the flat surface of the seal strip. Choose the correct position for adhesion, locate the starting point, and then press and adhere the seal strip bit by bit from the starting end. After ensuring all parts are correctly adhered, trim the soundproof strip appropriately, wait for a while, and then press it carefully and thoroughly by hand. After the adhesion is complete, avoid pulling the seal strip by hand, refrain from washing the car or exposing it to water for 3 days, and try not to repeatedly open and close the door within 24 hours.

That day I helped my uncle replace the trunk seal on his old Passat, and there are some tricks worth explaining. First, you need to pull off the old seal completely—be careful not to scratch the metal frame; use a plastic pry tool to gently lift it. Cleaning off the old adhesive residue is the most tedious part—I sprayed adhesive remover and let it sit for five minutes, then scraped it off with a hard card. Never use a steel wool pad! For the new seal, you need to slowly tuck the corners into the groove. If the rubber is too stiff, use a hairdryer to soften it for easier installation. After installation, press firmly along the edges several times, then test the seal by splashing water. After the replacement, the door closing sound became more solid, and there were no leaks during rainy days. Remember to buy a model-specific seal—aftermarket parts often don’t fit properly.

Experience of replacing the rubber seal three times by myself: Prepare WD-40 and fine sandpaper in advance. Be patient when removing the old seal, as residual clips may be rusted in place—apply lubricant before pulling. Focus on cleaning rust inside the groove, sand it down, and apply grease to prevent rust. Install the new seal starting from the top-left corner, gently tapping it into the track with a rubber mallet. Pay special attention to the drainage hole to avoid blocking it. After installation, secure it with painter's tape for 12 hours. Post-replacement, check if the seal protrudes near the lock position, as it may affect closing. Choose EPDM material for durability and anti-aging. DIY replacement saves over 300 yuan, but it's tough on the nails.

I only realized the sealing strip had aged when I found the trunk carpet wet. Here are key points to note during replacement: Compare the shape with the original strip before removal, and photograph the clip positions with your phone. Avoid using blades to scrape off adhesive to prevent paint damage - opt for adhesive remover paste from supermarkets for safety. Soften the new strip by sun exposure first, and install from the middle outward for easier fitting. Avoid car washes for three days post-replacement as the adhesive takes 72 hours to fully cure. Winter replacements are best done in a garage. While this task requires no technical skills, it does demand considerable patience.
