How to Replace the Battery in a Chevrolet Equinox Key Fob?

Remove the mechanical key. Open the key fob cover. You can partially insert the mechanical key into the key slot and then pry it upwards. Once the cover is open, you will see the position of the old battery. A flat-head screwdriver can be used to better remove the old battery. Ensure the new battery is placed with the positive side facing up. Reassemble the key fob in reverse order. Test the lock button and other functions to ensure they are working properly.
Last time I replaced the battery for my Chevrolet Equinox key fob myself, and it was as simple as with other car keys. First, you need to prepare a new battery, usually a CR2032 coin cell, which can be bought at supermarkets or online. The key fob casing has a small notch or button, so carefully pry it open with a flathead screwdriver or a hard card, being careful not to damage the plastic shell. Once opened, you'll see the old battery—remember its orientation, remove it, and replace it with the new one, ensuring the positive and negative sides are correctly aligned (usually the positive side faces up). Then, gently snap the casing back together. After replacing, test the key fob's lock and unlock functions to ensure they work. I recommend checking it every year or two—if the battery dies, the key fob will fail, affecting the car's secure start. Avoid exposing the key fob to high heat or heavy pressure to extend its lifespan. It costs just a few bucks and is much more convenient than going to a repair shop. Doing it yourself also helps develop some handy skills.
