Generally, it should be replaced every two years or 40,000 kilometers—don't skimp on this cost as it affects braking safety.
The most crucial thing when changing the brake fluid for a Focus is to prevent air from entering the oil line, as brake failure can be dangerous. You'll need to prepare 1L of DOT4 brake fluid—buy the same type as the original factory uses. First, clean the dust around the oil reservoir, then pump out the old fluid below the minimum line before pouring in the new fluid. Find a helper to take turns pressing the brake pedal: start bleeding from the right rear wheel farthest from the driver's seat, releasing at least 200ml of fluid from each wheel.
