How to Renew an Expired C1 Driver's License?

There are two ways to renew an expired C1 driver's license: One is to visit the local traffic management department in person. According to Article 57 of the "Traffic Regulations and Penalty Rules": The driver of a motor vehicle shall apply for license renewal at the vehicle management office where the license was issued or another office within 90 days before the expiration of the driver's license. The other method is to use the online renewal service via the Traffic Management 12123 app (V2.8.1B437 for iOS 15 and above or V2.8.1B274 for Android 12 and above). Taking Apple iOS 15 as an example: Open the Traffic Management app on an iPhone, navigate to the driver's license services page, and select 'Renewal upon Expiration.' After reading the instructions, fill in your personal information and proceed to the driver's license details page. Then, move to the next step to upload a new license photo and medical examination report. Finally, enter the mailing address information, confirm everything is correct, and pay the relevant fees. For the annual renewal of an expired driver's license, the old license must be surrendered to the vehicle management office. According to Order No. 123 from the Ministry of Public Security, the renewal can be applied for up to 90 days in advance at the original issuing office. Documents required for license renewal: Original and photocopy of ID card. Medical examination report from a hospital designated by the vehicle management office. Completed driver's license renewal application form and processing fee. Three one-inch white-background color photos. You can bring your own photos and medical examination report. If you're concerned about non-compliance, you can complete these at the traffic police office to save time. Important notes about license renewal: If caught driving with an expired license, you will be fined but not penalized with points. There are deadlines for renewal: If expired for less than a year, you can renew normally; if expired for one to three years, the license will be canceled, but you can regain it by passing the written test (Subject 1); if expired for over three years, the license is permanently canceled. For applicants of special small automatic passenger vehicles for the disabled, a medical certificate issued by a specialized medical institution designated by the provincial health authority must be submitted.
I've been driving for over a decade, and driver's license expiration is all too common. You need to handle it promptly—don't drag your feet and risk getting fined for driving with an expired license. First, visit a hospital for a health checkup to prove you're fit to drive; it’s quite convenient nowadays, just book an appointment via WeChat. Then, head to the DMV or use the 12123 app to apply for a renewal online. Bring your ID card, expired license, and a few white-background photos (or take them onsite). Pay a small fee of a few dozen yuan, and your new license will be mailed to you in 2-3 days. If it’s been expired for less than a year, the process is straightforward, but beyond a year, you’ll have to retake the written test (Subject 1)—don’t wait too long, or it’ll disrupt your driving routine. Always check your license’s expiry date; renewing it every six years in advance saves hassle. Safety first, after all.
