Clean the dirt on the surface of the water pump, remove the slotted nut at the front end of the water pump shaft, and use a special puller to remove the pulley hub and the half-round key. Remove the water pump cover and gasket, then dismantle the water pump impeller according to its structural features using appropriate methods, and press out the water pump shaft with a special tool. After soaking the pump body in hot water at about 85°C, press out the water pump bearing with a special tool. Then, take out the water seal assembly.
Removing the water pump on an Infiniti Q50L, I've done it several times before, mainly because the water pump tends to leak, causing engine overheating. First, make sure the engine is completely cooled—safety first. I usually wait a few hours or until the engine is cold before starting. Next, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid any risk of short circuits. Draining the coolant is the most crucial step; otherwise, it’ll be a mess—open the radiator drain valve or the plug at the bottom of the water pump and use a bucket to collect the old fluid. Then, remove obstacles like the intake pipe and the alternator belt. The water pump is usually located at the front of the engine, and you’ll need to remove the mounting bolts. Use a properly sized wrench or socket, loosen them gently, and avoid forcing them to prevent damaging the threads. Once the water pump is removed, clean the mounting surface thoroughly, ensuring all old sealant is scraped off. Install a new gasket or apply fresh sealant, and tighten the bolts evenly without excessive torque. Finally, refill with new coolant, start the engine, and check for leaks. The whole process takes about one to two hours. Beginners should definitely refer to repair manuals or videos, and avoid using makeshift tools, as they can cause issues. Remember to dispose of the old coolant responsibly.
