How to Remove the Tail Light of a Highlander?

First, unlock the driver's side door and open it. The lower left side of the door trim panel is where you need to start. Next, remove the inner lining on the side where the tail light is located. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry open the clips, then pull the lining away by hand. There are three nuts securing the rear tail light. Use a small ratchet with an 8mm socket to remove each of these nuts one by one. The tail light wiring harness is a single plug. Simply pull this plug out by hand to disconnect it. Finally, hold both sides of the rear tail light with both hands and gently pull outward. This will separate the tail light from the vehicle body.
I've taken apart the Highlander taillights several times, and the steps aren't complicated. First, find the right tools—I usually use a Phillips screwdriver and a small pry bar. Open the tailgate and locate the taillight housing's mounting points from inside the rear panel: the Highlander typically has several screws on the side. Loosen them, then gently push the housing to release it. Carefully unplug the wiring connector—make sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal first to avoid short-circuiting and blowing a fuse. After removal, check if the light assembly is dirty or has moisture inside, as this is often overlooked and can cause the light to fail after replacement. Throughout the process, I wear gloves to protect my hands and the car's paint from scratches. It takes about 10 minutes to complete. If you encounter stubborn screws, a drop of WD-40 makes them easier to turn.
