How to Remove the Passat Airbag Cover?

First, pry off the steering wheel cover plate. Use a socket wrench to unscrew the bolts securing the steering wheel. Remove the steering wheel. Unscrew the fixing bolts on both sides, and the airbag can then be detached.
I've disassembled the Passat airbag cover several times, safety is the top priority. First, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 30 minutes for the airbag system to fully discharge to avoid accidental triggering. Locate the fastening screws or clips at the rear of the steering wheel, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws, then gently pry open the cover with a small pry tool - avoid excessive force to prevent damaging the plastic clips. Note that older and newer Passat models have different designs; some have hidden screws beneath the cover, so remember to photograph the original positions for reassembly. After removal, inspect the airbag module for dust or aging, and clean or replace as needed. Wear anti-static gloves throughout the process and ensure a dry working environment. If inexperienced, I recommend professional service - the airbag system is sensitive and prone to malfunctions, and vehicle safety shouldn't be compromised.
