How to Remove the Gear Shift Knob of a 2007 Polo Automatic Transmission?

Remove the clip under the gear lever. Pull out the P-gear button on the gear shift knob and secure it with electrical tape (be careful not to let the button retract, otherwise it won't be able to be reinstalled). Then pull it upwards to remove it.
As a long-time POLO owner, I remember removing the automatic gear knob on the 2007 model was quite straightforward. However, I recommend preparing a small flathead screwdriver and plastic pry tools. Make sure to turn off the engine and engage the handbrake. When lifting the leather trim around the gear knob, avoid pulling forcefully - it usually has clips that release when gently prying the edges. There might be screws hidden inside; after removing them, you can pull the knob straight up. But if it feels stuck, don't force it - some POLO models have wiring connected to illumination. When I did this, I encountered brittle plastic due to aging and ended up replacing the part for less than 100 RMB. After removal, it's a good opportunity to clean out dust. When reinstalling, just align it properly and tighten. Regular maintenance keeps older cars running smoothly - safety first!
I just finished working on my POLO's gear shift lever. The steps are straightforward: first, turn off the engine and shift to P mode. You can remove the panel decoration by hand, but if it's stuck, just use a flathead screwdriver to pry it open. Unscrew the two or three screws at the bottom, but be careful not to drop them into the car where you can't find them. The gear shift lever might be a bit tight when pulling it out—just wiggle it left and right to loosen it. If there are electronic wires, be cautious not to pull them apart. The whole process takes no more than 10 minutes, and a small socket set is all you need for tools. After disassembly, check the internal structure—it’s much cleaner now. I recommend applying some lubricant to prevent strange noises. Don’t forget to take photos—DIY is full of fun!
