How to Remove the Battery from a Mercedes Key?
2 Answers
Mercedes has introduced three generations of car keys over the past two decades. Below are the methods for replacing the battery in these three types of keys: 1. Newer keys from 2014 onwards: There is a button on the back of the key. Press this button and slide the back cover forward to open the key. The battery is located in a slot nearby. During the replacement process, pay close attention to the battery model. Most Mercedes key batteries are of the 3V-CR2025 type. After opening the slot, remove the old battery and replace it with a new one. Then, reattach the back cover of the key. Once the cover is securely in place, the battery replacement is complete. 2. Mercedes keys from 2006 to 2013: First, flip open the tab at the rear end of the key to remove the mechanical key. Insert the mechanical key into the slot where the tab is located and apply slight pressure to pop open the back cover. Then, remove the depleted old battery and replace it with a new one. Close the back cover to complete the battery replacement. 3. Older Mercedes keys: Similarly, flip open the tab at the rear end of the key to remove the mechanical key. Insert the mechanical key into the side slot of the key and press the internal gray button while using your other hand to push the rear end of the key upward. When a gap appears, you can remove the mechanical key. Then, manually remove the rear end to access and replace the battery. After installing the new battery, reinsert the key holder to complete the battery replacement.
I've been driving a Mercedes for a while now and have replaced the key battery at least three times. My experience is to look for the small gap along the edge of the key, then gently pry it open with a flathead screwdriver or credit card. Most Mercedes keys use a snap-fit design, so don't use excessive force to avoid cracking the plastic. The battery is usually a CR2032 coin cell, which you can find cheaply online or at supermarkets. When removing the old battery, make sure your hands are dry to prevent static electricity from affecting the internal electronics. After replacement, press the cover firmly and test it by locking/unlocking the doors. I recommend checking the key battery every two years - don't wait until the remote stops working. Doing it yourself saves the dealership labor fee, and it's simple and hassle-free.
