Method for removing the airbag of the Passat Lingyu: 1. Before removing the airbag, disconnect the battery terminal and adjust the steering wheel to the lowest position. Adjust the steering wheel depth and pull the steering wheel out to the limit position; 2. Insert a screwdriver into the hole on the back of the steering wheel until it reaches the limit position (about 8MM), then turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to release the locking piece of the right-side airbag unit of the steering wheel. The Passat Lingyu is a mid-size car under the Volkswagen brand, with a length, width, and height of 4789mm, 1765mm, and 1470mm respectively, a wheelbase of 2803mm, and a minimum ground clearance of 110mm.
As someone who frequently works on car repairs, I find removing airbags to be quite dangerous. I remember one time helping a friend with an airbag issue on a Passat Lingyu. You must first disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for at least 20 minutes; otherwise, accidental deployment of the airbag can be deadly. Then, remove the screws on the steering wheel cover—usually requiring a Torx or hex wrench—being careful not to scratch the steering wheel. After removing the cover, you'll find the airbag module inside. You need to use some finesse to release the clips—don’t force it. The whole process should be done slowly, and the Passat’s seatbelt should also be loosened to prevent accidental triggering. Regular maintenance checks on the airbag system are much better than dealing with issues afterward, which is why I always recommend going to a 4S dealership—they’re professional and hassle-free.
