How to Remove an Undermount Spare Tire?
2 Answers
First remove the dust cover, then at the very rear of the trunk you will find the screw for disassembling the spare tire. Connect the socket wrench to the screw head and turn it counterclockwise. The spare tire will slowly descend under the traction of the steel cable or chain. Pull down the steel cable or chain, then remove the clip below to take out the undermount spare tire.
When I first bought my car, I also found the under-mounted spare tire hard to remove, but after getting used to long-distance driving, it became second nature. You need to prepare the tools first—usually, the car comes with a spare tire hook or wrench. Locate the anchor point underneath the car, typically near the rear axle where there's a metal bracket or latch. Shine a flashlight to spot the bolt head—that's the right spot. Use the wrench to turn it counterclockwise two or three turns, but don't force it too hard to avoid stripping the threads. The spare tire will gradually lower—hold it steady to prevent it from dropping on your foot. Last time I had a flat on a remote road, this method saved me. Remember to stabilize the car with a jack—safety first. Spray some anti-rust oil during regular maintenance to prevent seizing, making removal quicker and easier.
