First, the vehicle must have the necessary hardware support. Currently, only a few new models support this feature, such as the X7, the new X5, and the new 3 Series. Activate this function in the iDrive system by selecting Vehicle→Settings→Climate Control, then choose Preconditioning/Ventilation in the submenu and confirm. Press the [Lock] button on the key fob three times consecutively. Locate the remote control interface, press and hold the middle [START/STOP] button for about 2 seconds, and the engine will start. Enter the vehicle status and control button interface, find the [Ventilate Now] button, click to remotely start the engine, and confirm.
Actually, you can remotely activate the air conditioning using the BMW key—I've tried it and found it super convenient. Just press and hold the diamond-shaped button on the key for 3 seconds, and the car will pre-start the AC system. If you press it five minutes before leaving in summer, the cabin will be refreshingly cool when you get in, and even the leather seats won't feel scorching hot. However, there are two limitations to note: the fuel tank must have at least 7 km of range remaining, and the battery must be sufficiently charged. The key's effective control range is about 100 meters—beyond that, the signal won't reach. This feature is also incredibly useful in northern winters, saving time by melting frost on the windows in advance.
