How to Read a VIN Code?

The 10th digit represents the model year. The 1st digit is 'L' indicating China, the 2nd and 3rd digits represent the manufacturer, and digits 4-9 indicate the vehicle type and configuration. The model year is represented by a letter or number (but the number cannot be 0, and the letters cannot be O, Q, I, or Z). The 11th digit is the assembly plant letter or number.
When I usually look for the VIN, I first check the small plate near the driver's side at the bottom of the windshield—the 17-digit code is quite noticeable. Additionally, after opening the door, the label or nameplate on the door frame often has the VIN engraved. If you're checking while parked on the roadside, sometimes there’s also an imprint next to the engine under the hood. This code can tell you the car’s manufacturer, model, and year, among other details—super handy. For example, I always rely on it to check history records during maintenance or when buying/selling used cars to avoid pitfalls. There are plenty of free online tools where you can input the VIN to check accident reports or maintenance history—it’s very straightforward and saves you from paying for professional services, making life easier for everyday car owners. Pay attention to these spots, and once you get used to it, you’ll never be left clueless again.
