A6's defogging buttons are located in the center console button area. The front windshield and rear windshield defogging function buttons can be activated by pressing the corresponding switches. To quickly remove frost and condensation from the front windshield and side windows, the external air vents need to be directed towards the respective side windows. When the outside temperature is low, it is necessary to additionally activate the front windshield heating function, at which time the button will flash. The interior air recirculation mode is turned off. The temperature should be set to 22°C or higher, and the air conditioning (A/C) will automatically activate based on the ambient temperature.

I drive an A6, and the front defogger button gets the most use during winter mornings. Look for the button with a fan-shaped ripple pattern in the center console’s AC control area—it’s usually next to the rear window heating button. When you press it, the AC automatically switches to external circulation, and the fan suddenly gets quite loud, so don’t be startled. Setting the temperature around 22°C works best for a comfortable mix of warm and cool air, which clears fog the fastest. I usually remote-start the car five minutes early, and the AC automatically defogs, making it hassle-free to just get in and drive. If it’s pouring rain, remember to manually turn on the AC—the compressor dehumidifies more efficiently. Oh, and don’t turn it off right after defogging; keep it on for three more minutes before switching to auto mode, or the windshield will fog up again.

When repairing cars, I often help owners adjust this defogging function. It's actually just two steps: first, find the physical button with the icon of a windshield emitting steam and press it to light up, you'll hear the blower start humming. At this point, the air conditioning will automatically switch to the windshield defrost mode—don't randomly turn the air direction knob. The key is to turn on the recirculation mode for faster defogging, but don't exceed ten minutes, or the car will get stuffy. For newer models with touchscreens, simply tap the defogging icon in the air conditioning menu—the effect is the same. To permanently solve fogging issues, regularly replace the cabin air filter and applying an anti-fog spray on the glass also helps.

When driving an A6 to take kids to school, fogging is the worst. My trick is to hit three buttons simultaneously: turn on the AC compressor for dehumidification, set the temperature to Hi for hot air to defog the windshield, and activate external air circulation. It clears up in about 30 seconds. For stubborn fog, try pressing the rear defroster button too—this engages the car's full heating system. Never wipe fog by hand as it leaves oily streaks. Before parking, run the fan without AC for 5 minutes to reduce frost buildup overnight.

I remember when I first picked up the car, the salesperson taught me: After pressing the defog button, don't worry about the auto start-stop indicator light, the system will automatically adjust the fan speed to maximum. It's recommended to use Auto mode and let the system adjust itself, as manual operation can easily lead to excessive cooling and fuel consumption. The new A6's intelligent defogging is even more impressive, automatically activating via a humidity sensor. For older models with manual air conditioning, it's best to combine it with the foot vent mode to prevent air leakage underfoot. The methods for defogging differ between winter and summer: in summer, turn off the hot air and use low-temperature dehumidification, while in winter, use high-temperature drying instead.

Many car owners don't know the proper way to use the defogging button. First, make sure to start the vehicle before pressing the button, otherwise the system won't receive power. Opening windows slightly to release moisture doubles the defogging effect. If fog isn't completely cleared, it's likely due to mold growth in AC ducts - an evaporator cleaning will solve this. For long trips, pre-activate the anti-fog function; Audi's climate system maintains glass temperature difference to prevent fogging. In emergencies, wiping glass with soap works, but the built-in defogger remains the safest and most reliable solution.
